Outlaws fall to Seminoles in Season Opener

Updated: Mar 6, 2018

The Capital City Outlaws lost a barn burner to the Sangamon County Seminoles 56-72 to open the 2018 MA8FL Season.

The game opened with an attempted onside kick from the Seminoles that was recovered by the Outlaws setting up great field position for the first drive of the season. The Outlaws offense made quick work of the possession as quarterback Drew Fendrich connected with wide receiver Connor Ward for a 20 yard TD strike to make the score 6-0 less than 30 seconds into the 2018 season. Both teams seemed in mid-season form, combining for 9 touchdowns in a back and forth first quarter making the score 24-32 in favor of the Seminoles.

The offensive affair continued through the remainder of the first half with the Outlaws and Seminoles each finding the end zone two times in the second quarter making the half time score 36-46. The Seminoles received the second half kick off and both teams traded scores on their respective first possessions of the second half. The Seminoles eventually pulled away in the second half as the under manned Outlaws began to run out of steam.

The Outlaws welcomed many new faces to the team highlighted by performances by 4 rookie receivers: Ward was on the receiving end of 4 touchdown passes, Andrew Morrow hauled in 3, Leighton Morrissey had 1, and Rocky Morse was a major contributor in the return game as well as making many exciting plays in the passing game. Fendrich ended the game accounting for 9 total touchdowns including 8 through the air and 1 on the ground.

The Outlaws (0-1) are on the road next week as they travel to Chenoa, IL play the 2017 MA8FL runner-up Mid-State Thunderbirds (1-0) fresh off of their win against the 2017 MA8FL champions the Midwest Hawks.
